A channel is one call happening right now. Your channel limit is how many can happen at once.

CAPACITY PLANNING

Size your channel limit for the calls you actually run at once

Size for your busiest moment, not your average

A channel limit needs to cover the number of calls happening at the exact same time: your peak, not your daily or monthly total.

A campaign’s total list size doesn’t matter here

Whether your campaign has 50 numbers or 50,000, what matters for your channel limit is how many of those calls are ever running simultaneously.

Mixing inbound and outbound eats from the same pool

If you’re running an outbound campaign and receiving inbound calls at the same time, both count against the one channel limit together.

Plan around your worst-case overlap

The riskiest moment is when inbound and outbound traffic peak at the same time. That’s the number to size against, not either one alone.

Capacity that scales with you

One shared pool

Voice Apps and SIP trunks share one channel pool, not separate limits.

Grows with traffic

Grows with traffic
As your call volume grows, your channel limit can grow along with it.

A config change

Raising capacity is one attribute change: no hardware, no contract.

Same for every call

Inbound, outbound, Voice App or SIP trunk: every live call counts the same.

What exactly is a channel?

One simultaneous call - inbound or outbound, on a Voice App or a SIP trunk. Five calls happening at once means five channels in use.

Shared, account-wide. It isn't split per number, per Voice App, or per SIP trunk.

Yes. A number isn't limited to one channel - if ten callers dial the same number at the exact same moment, that's ten channels in use, all on that one number, as long as your overall channel limit covers it.

The limit is a real cap - a call beyond it can't proceed until a channel frees up.

It's set through the channel_limit attribute. See the API reference for the exact request.

Yes - every call in progress, regardless of direction or integration type, counts against the one shared limit.

Size it to your busiest moment of overlapping calls, not your total daily or monthly volume.
